Walden McMillan Hearn Jr. (1944-2022)


Walden was born in Teachey, NC. He grew up in Elizabeth City, NC, and graduated from NC State University with dual degrees in Animal Science and Agricultural Education. He taught Ag Ed and woodshop as a new graduate. He became an Agricultural Extension Agent in Bertie County in 1970, then transferred to Forsyth and Yadkin counties in 1977. He retired from RJR as a researcher in 2009.

In June 1967, Walden met the beautiful and sweet Linda Frising while still in college. He decided at their first meeting that he was going to spend the rest of his life with her. March 1968 marked the beginning of a loving marriage of over 54 years.

Walden was a great teacher, a caretaker of animals, an avid gardener and an accomplished furniture maker. He could fix practically anything, and he always made sure his family had what they needed. He was so proud of and blessed by the women in his life. He inspired them to be whatever they aspired to be.

Walden is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Linda, treasured daughters Lianne Hearn of Raleigh and Caroline Durham (Trip) of Burlington, NC, sisters Jane Hill (Ron) of Cary, NC, and Nancy Francis (Chuck) of Atlanta, and brother Noel Hearn of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Wes Francis, Robert Francis (Hannah), Kate Wright (David), Lance Liggett (Maria), Alissa Liggett, John Hearn (Jolene) and Charlie Hearn.

Walden was preceded in death by his parents, Walden Sr. and Bessie Hearn, and his baby sister, Margot Liggett (Emory), with whom he shared a birthday 12 years apart.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 21, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, at 2 pm with Reverend Amy Carlan officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. An interment for extended family will be on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at Red House Cemetery near Teachey, NC, at 2pm.

Rev George Jarvis McMillan

Rev. George Jarvis McMillan (1932-2022) 

Reverend George Jarvis McMillan, 89, passed away on April 2, 2022, in Brewster, Massachusetts where he was a thirteen year resident of The Woodlands at Pleasant Bay. He was born August 14, 1932, in Wallace, North Carolina to Asha Kathryn Williams McMillan and George Francis McMillan. He received a BS in Engineering from North Carolina State University and a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. He completed his Religion and Psychiatry Residency at Topeka Kansas State Psychiatric Hospital.

Early in his career as a pastoral counselor, psychotherapist, and educator he served as Chaplain for the Columbia South Carolina State Psychiatric Hospital and then the Nevada Missouri State Psychiatric Hospital. Subsequently, for twenty-three years he was the Chief Chaplain and Director of Clinical Pastoral Education for Spring Grove State Psychiatric Hospital in Catonsville, Maryland. He was the founder and first director of The Pastoral Counseling and Consultation Center of Greater Baltimore that brought comfort and healing to his community. Reverend McMillan was one of the fifteen founding chaplains that formed The College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy that now has over 1500 members. When he later moved to North Carolina he was a pastoral counseling training officer for both Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville and Mission Hospital in Asheville. In addition, he was a therapist for the Pastoral Counseling Center in Greenville, South Carolina.

Being multitalented, he could build or fix anything he set his mind to. He was an avid antique and classic car enthusiast, mechanic, and collector. Raising fancy pigeons and show canaries was another of his many interests. He was an excellent father and enjoyed camping and traveling with his family. He was a citizen diplomat for peace and a lifelong active participant in the anti-nuclear movement.

He is survived by his much loved daughters; Claire Campbell McMillan, Cindy (Maura Corson) Carr McMillan, Mary Jane McMillan, and Lisa McMillan Rosenquist. He leaves behind his adored grandchildren; Cara (Timothy) Michelle Givens, McCoy Cornelius McMillan, Scott (Alice) McCoy Holland, Daniel Monroe Holland, Devlin James McMillan-Cashman, Lily Kathryn Rosenquist, and Katharin Cook. He also leaves behind his treasured great-grandchildren; Evelyn Jane Givens, Valerie Kate Givens, Ronin Pierce Givens, Ava Holland, Abigail Ann MacBride, and many dear nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister Kathryn Doris McMillan Faires and her husband Archie Brown Faires, younger sister Suzanne Williams McMillan, former wife Jane McKy Campbell, brother-in-law Fred Tyler Campbell, and son-in-law Jerry Linn Rosenquist.
