Walden McMillan Hearn Jr. (1944-2022)

Walden was born in Teachey, NC. He grew up in Elizabeth City, NC, and graduated from NC State University with dual degrees in Animal Science and Agricultural Education. He taught Ag Ed and woodshop as a new graduate. He became an Agricultural Extension Agent in Bertie County in 1970, then transferred to Forsyth and Yadkin counties in 1977. He retired from RJR as a researcher in 2009.

In June 1967, Walden met the beautiful and sweet Linda Frising while still in college. He decided at their first meeting that he was going to spend the rest of his life with her. March 1968 marked the beginning of a loving marriage of over 54 years.

Walden was a great teacher, a caretaker of animals, an avid gardener and an accomplished furniture maker. He could fix practically anything, and he always made sure his family had what they needed. He was so proud of and blessed by the women in his life. He inspired them to be whatever they aspired to be.

Walden is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Linda, treasured daughters Lianne Hearn of Raleigh and Caroline Durham (Trip) of Burlington, NC, sisters Jane Hill (Ron) of Cary, NC, and Nancy Francis (Chuck) of Atlanta, and brother Noel Hearn of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Wes Francis, Robert Francis (Hannah), Kate Wright (David), Lance Liggett (Maria), Alissa Liggett, John Hearn (Jolene) and Charlie Hearn.

Walden was preceded in death by his parents, Walden Sr. and Bessie Hearn, and his baby sister, Margot Liggett (Emory), with whom he shared a birthday 12 years apart.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 21, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, NC, at 2 pm with Reverend Amy Carlan officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. An interment for extended family will be on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at Red House Cemetery near Teachey, NC, at 2pm.
